In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Bipinchandra Bhamre, consultant cardiac surgeon, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai, shared, “Bypass surgery for the heart, medically known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). What is known is a process. Restore blood flow to the heart when heart arteries become narrowed or blocked. Often resulting from atherosclerosis, this condition can prevent oxygen-rich blood from reaching vital areas of the heart muscle, causing chest pain or even more serious cardiovascular events. Therefore, one may require bypass surgery.”

According to him, what sets bypass surgery apart is not only its immediate goal of increasing blood circulation, but also its transformative potential for the overall health of patients. Dr Bipinchandra Bhamre revealed, “Many individuals report an overall improvement in their quality of life after surgery and they are able to return to activities without any difficulty. Additionally, advances in surgical techniques and technologies have resulted in minimally invasive options that are safe, effective, and minimize recovery periods. However, after bypass surgery, you need to follow the instructions given by your cardiac surgeon to stay healthy and well and have successful outcomes.

Precautions after bypass surgery

“It’s been a month,” said Dr Bipin Chandra Bhamre.penance“When you are recovering from bypass surgery. For the initial 7 days you will stay inside the hospital including 3 days in the ICU. Gradually as you recover in the ICU you will be given a ventilator and other tubes to monitor your vital organs. After one is removed, most ICU patients are following a fast track recovery protocol, starting with walking, sitting on the edge of the bed, and then sitting on a chair. And then after 2 days of surgery you start walking.The pain is natural due to fresh stitches, it reduces by 50% after 2 days and then by 4th day.

He suggested –

1. Once you start walking, initially it should be 5 to 7 minutes and later increase as you gain strength day by day, so at the end of a month You should walk for 40 minutes a day, divided into 20-minute sessions.

2. Deep breathing exercise is a very important aspect and should be done for 2 months from the date of surgery.

3. As long as you are in the hospital, the doctors, staff nurses, physios and other team members take care of you. At the time of discharge, the patient and family are instructed to follow the recovery plan. Remember that not all days are the same during recovery, sometimes you will feel energetic and other times you will need to rest.

4. To avoid contact with infection from outside, you will have to stay inside your house.

5. You must restrict visitors at home or maintain a distance of 6 feet when interacting.

6. You must follow strict aspects of daily skin care by cleaning and scrub baths or water baths along with hand hygiene as directed by your surgical team.

7. You cannot bend forward or sleep on your side or stomach for 4 to 6 weeks until your incision has completely healed.

8. Inside your home you can walk actively while doing regular stretching exercises and breathing exercises guided by the team, remember that human healing is better when we are relaxed and try to relax and refresh yourself. Home is the best place to do that.

9. When you are recovering from bypass surgery, we generally recommend eating simple home-cooked meals that are easy to digest and provide enough energy for recovery. Protein in the form of milk, cheese, soya, various pulses, curd, buttermilk as well as green vegetables, chapati and rice is sufficient to provide the energy required for the treatment.

10. Generally the wound requires dressing for 2 to 3 weeks until all the stitches are removed.

11. Quit smoking and other types of tobacco.

12. Say goodbye to alcohol as you recover.

13. Focus on a nutritious diet by including a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while reducing your intake of sugar, salt, and saturated fat.

14. Control your body weight – After surgery, excess weight can increase due to water. We will need to limit water intake for a few weeks during recovery.

15. Engage in regular physical activity as exercise plays an important role in managing diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure which are risk factors for heart disease. After doctor’s permission, do light exercise for at least 30 minutes.

16. Manage stress with mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation and participation in support groups can be beneficial. If you experience anxiety or depression, discuss possible coping strategies with your doctor.

17. Get quality sleep to reduce the risk of heart disease. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every day and you will feel better.

18. Regular follow-up and medication: It is essential to follow the medication routine suggested by the doctor and get regular follow-ups and screening done to know the heart health status. Monitor your vital organs like high blood pressure, high blood sugar and cholesterol levels from time to time to avoid any other problems.
