taipei: A major earthquake struck Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, shortly before 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday, prompting a tsunami warning for the self-ruled island as well as parts of southern Japan. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4, with its epicenter 18 kilometers south of Hualien city of Taiwan at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.
