The life-saving fat that helps maintain proper heart and brain health may also be the body’s immune response to cancer. In a recent study led by Yuchen Zhang of the University of Georgia, omega-3 ad omega-6 fatty acids have been studied for their ability to protect against several cancers.
The study was conducted on 250000 people in the United Kingdom and tracked them for about 10 years, of which 30000 reported suffering from some form of cancer.

Studies have shown that higher levels of omega-3s are linked to lower rates of colon, stomach and lung cancer, as well as other digestive system cancers. Participants with higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids had a lower risk of developing 14 different types of cancer, including brain, skin, bladder and others.
Yuchen Zhang, a doctoral student at the University of Georgia and leader of the study, said in a university release that the study results prove why people should increase their intake of these healthy fatty acids in the diet.

Many benefits of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids:
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known for their healthy effects on bodily functions. The study further observed that regardless of a person’s overall health profile, including weight, alcohol use or physical activity, healthy fats have a protective effect against cancer.

Higher omega-3 levels may not be all good news
However, having high levels of omega-3 fatty acids also has some disadvantages. It was observed that high levels of healthy fats may increase the risk of prostate cancer in men. The protective effect of omega-6 fatty acids was seen more in women than in men.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help manage inflammation in the body and regulate cell growth. This may further help in improving immunity and protecting the body from cancer.
