Friday, June 28 was a historic day in the national capital. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded 228.1 mm of rain – the second highest since June 1936, when 235.5 mm of rain was recorded. A normal spell of monsoon in India brings with it its joys and sorrows. Sitting by the window with a cup of tea, watching the rains can be a very tempting hobby, but it doesn’t really have much control over your immunity due to the fluctuations in humidity and temperature. However, you can take some preventive measures by avoiding certain foods as long as it is raining.
Leafy greens and vegetables
Leafy greens are a no-no during the monsoon season. Vegetables like spinach, cabbage, lettuce and bok choy are rich in water content. Leafy greens become a very potential breeding ground for bacterial and fungal growth during monsoon due to the moisture in the air. If it becomes too much, it can cause stomach infections. So, it is best to avoid such aches and pains during the gloomy season.
root vegetables
Root vegetables are indeed an integral part of most people’s daily diet. Eliminating them completely may prove to be really difficult. Examples of this are bulbs like onions, tap roots like carrots and everyone’s favourite tuber, potatoes, etc. The logic behind avoiding these vegetables is that the vegetables tend to absorb a lot of moisture due to the high water content in the soil. This inadvertently makes them more susceptible to bacterial growth.
One way to safely eat root vegetables during monsoon is to boil them well or cook them thoroughly. However, avoid eating root vegetables raw during this time, such as in salads.
Seafood
Seafood is a food that is available all year round. However, delicacies like fish and shrimp are more exposed to pathogens and bacteria that are already present in freshwater bodies during this time. This naturally increases the risk of a person eating seafood falling ill.
Additional things to keep in mind
Things like yogurt which are generally consumed cold and naturally have a high water content can cause prolonged discomfort for those who already suffer from migraines or clogged sinuses. Also, it is best to limit the consumption of all types of melons and things like cucumbers and eggplants during the rainy season.
