There was uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in Srinagar on November 7 after Engineer Rasheed’s brother and MLA Khurshid Ahmed Sheikh displayed a banner on Article 370, the provision granting special status to the erstwhile state that was abolished in August 2019.
Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Sunil Sharma objected to Sheikh’s action.
“We demand restoration of Articles 370 and 35A. Release of political prisoners,” read the banner displayed by the Awami Ittehad Party MLA from Langate. Following the objection of BJP members, the House was adjourned for some time due to the uproar. BJP MLAs continued their protest when the House resumed. After this the proceedings of the House were adjourned for the day.
The uproar broke out on Wednesday a day after Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary moved a resolution urging restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state.
The resolution moved by Chaudhary was later passed, “This Legislative Assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees that protect the identity, culture and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and expresses concern over their unilateral removal of.” Said by the House.
The move reignited tensions over Article 370, which was removed in August 2019 and previously granted a special constitutional autonomy to the state.
A chaotic scene was witnessed on the first day of the first session of the newly elected Jammu and Kashmir Assembly when opposition member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Waheed Para moved a resolution against the abrogation of Article 370.
BJP’s strong reaction reflects the party’s firm stand on Article 370. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, citing national unity and uniformity as reasons for the reorganisation.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly convened for its first session in six years on Monday, November 4 and will conclude on November 8.
Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was abrogated by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move divided the erstwhile state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
