In a fresh flashpoint within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior MP Kalyan Banerjee resigned as the party’s main whip in the Lok Sabha, citing internal discord and indicated fellow MP Mahua Motra for alleged personal attacks. MP of Bengal Burjas, Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dad Dod, has now been appointed as the role, while actor-royalist Sattabdi Roy has been nominated as Deputy Leader of TMC in the Lok Sabha.
The developments have once again brought light wide cracks under the party’s parliamentary leadership, even TMC attempted to consolidate the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.
What happened due to Kalyan Banerjee’s resignation?
On Monday, Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee resigned in the Lok Sabha as the party’s chief whip, which he described as TMC President Mamata Banerjee, which he described as a lack of coordination between party MPs and absence in Parliament. Resignation came after a run-in string with Krishnagar MP Mahua Motra, who allegedly made intense personal remarks about Banerjee in a public podcast.
In a satirical note posted on social media, Kalyan Banerjee wrote, “Thank you for accepting my resignation, for the chairperson. He also tagged Mamata Banerjee and the party’s official handle in the post.
Expressing disappointment, he also took a swipe at Mahua Motra, claiming that he had called him “misunderstanding” despite his previous support during the time of political adversity.
What did Mahua Motra say?
Although Mahua Motra did not publicly responded to Kalyan Banerjee’s resignation, she was the first time to congratulate Kakoli Ghosh Dast Dod Dad Dod and Shatabdi Roy for her new appointments.
“My senior colleagues @kakoligdastidar & @satabdiroyymp nominated as the Chief Koda and AITC Deputy Leader. He posted on X (East Twitter).
Kalyan Banerjee’s complaints stems from a podcast, where Mahua Motra used allegedly using allegedly derogatory and inhuman language to compare them “pig” and “sexually disappointed”.
Kalyan Banerjee described his comment as derogatory and contemplative of the “toxic double standard”.
What did Kalyan Banerjee say in his defense?
In a long and firm post on X, Banerjee said:
“In 2023, I was standing by Ms. Motra when she was set on fire in Parliament – I was firmly out, not a compulsion. Today, she repays that support by calling me a misunderstanding … I apologize to the nation to defend someone who clearly lacks basic gratitude.”
He further said that labeling a male colleague as “sexually disappointed” increases nationwide resentment if the roles reversed.
“Let’s clear: misuse is misuse – regardless of the penis,” he said.
Kalyan Banerjee stressed that his criticism was linked in questions of public accountability and personal conduct – not misunderstandings.
Who are the new TMC leaders in the Lok Sabha?
After Kalyan Banerjee’s exit as the main whip in the Lok Sabha, TMC. Kakoli Ghosh was appointed as Draidhi, a four -time MP of Barasawas, who was the new main whip of the party in the Lok Sabha. One and four-term MP and MP of Birham, Shatabdi Roy, has been nominated as Deputy Leader of the party in the House.
This announcement was made by TMC on an official post on X, which reads:
“In consultation with senior MPs, Chairperson has nominated Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dast Dar Did as the new main whip … and Mrs. Sanabadi Roy as the new deputy leader … with immediate effect.”
Earlier this week, Abhishek Banerjee was appointed as the leader of the TMC in the Lok Sabha, in which Roy set to help him in the new leadership structure.
What does this mean for TMC?
Kalyan Banerjee’s resignation as the main whip and his scary comments against Mahua Motra have once again highlighted internal forms within the TMC parliamentary wing. It comes at a time when the party is looking at its national footprint and project unity for important assembly elections in 2026.
While the leadership infection can help stabilize the parliamentary team, this intra-party clash is unlikely to fade the political decline-especially the growing effects of Mahua Motra and generational changes.
