Backbenchers in schools run by the state of Kerala will soon be a matter of past, as the state has planned to eliminate traditional row-wise seating due to its negative impact on students.
General Education Minister V Shivkutty announced on Tuesday that the government aims to end the concept of ‘backbenchers’ in classes.
In a Facebook post, he revealed that the General Education Department has decided to create an expert panel to determine the best seating system for the education system.
The minister said, “It has been decided to appoint a committee of experts to find out the best model suitable for our education system. Let us consider the suggestions of this panel and move forward.”
Sivankutty insisted that the concept of backbenchers can harm a student’s confidence and learning, and that no child should be left behind in their studies or life.
“Our goal is to ensure equal opportunity for all children. We are wondering how to do it,” they explained.
He said that many countries have adopted various models to eliminate the concept of backbenchers, and they invited them to support everyone in achieving better future for children.
The idea of eliminating backbenchers has been discussed in Kerala for some time, inspired by the Malayalam film “Stanhari Srikuttan”. In a film directed by Vinesh Vishwanathan, a school student suggested to change the traditional seating system after facing insults as a backbane.
Inspired by the film, some schools in the state have already adopted a U-shaped seating pattern, which ensures equal attention and prominence for all students. Vinesh Vishwanathan, director of the Malayalam film ‘Stanthi Srikuttan’, earlier said that he had received a message from the principal of a school in Punjab. After watching the film, the principal not only adopted this class model in his school, but also released the film for all the students.
Meanwhile, at the Ram Vilsom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVHSS) in Kerala, students’ chairs have already been arranged in U shape. This setup allows teachers to monitor evenly, eliminating the traditional backbenchar system. With the arrangement of this new class, each student has a chance to sit in the front line.
