Zenshu Episode 1 Review
Directed by Mitsuru Yamazaki and written by Kimiko Ueno, zenshuThe deadly supernatural familiarity of the novel takes its protagonist, Natsuko Hirose, so far that she literally dies of exhaustion. After setting the bar very high with her directorial debut as an animator, she is buried under the pressure of recreating the record-breaking feat with her follow-up project. Taking upon herself the responsibility of improving every aspect of her upcoming project, she is neither able to get great results on paper nor does she want anyone else’s help in this matter. Natsuko ultimately closes her world within the confines of her professional chamber, setting goals so far out of reach that it begins to be reflected in her unruly exterior, tragically reflecting her innate desolation.
Just as many of us fail to create a work-life balance either, allowing ourselves to consume, Natsuko too falls victim to it. And their downfall portrays a bleak reality that most of us have faced closely in the contemporary modern world. In real life, we seek comfort through channels that become escapist outlets. In the anime, he is Isekai.
By understanding the ground reality widely faced by many in the professional world, zenshu Episode 1, “First Stroke”, gets to the core of troubling human emotions. Most of us have often vowed to set ourselves apart for our own betterment, but rarely manage to do so. Taking that human premise into the anime universe, the brand new original MAPPA Project electrifies it with out-of-this-world visuals.
Reworking how isekai typically falls into place, the genre revives its sensibilities with a meta touch. Satire explodes on our screens not only because anime is about making an anime, but even more so because its own visual frame captures the toxic addiction of the industry, even when creative people run out of steam. They keep paddling tirelessly.
The title “Zenshu” echoes louder than ever in the opening scenes when Natsuko immerses herself in the work to such an extent that nothing makes sense, and she has no choice but to exploit the meaning of the Japanese word. does not survive, which prompts him to “make everything right”. and “Start again.”

The worldly cyclicality of his work continues in a cycle again and again. The only way out is escapism, which she finds in the cult-classic film ‘A Tale of Perishing’ – a fictional outlet that has long captured her heart and that has also inspired her to engage professionally. Have done. With this line. The visual leap from her boxed-up professional reality to a fantasy land without limits is an utterly stunning sight that leaves one’s eyes wide, as if it revives Natsuko’s life with colors, taking her back to her long Gets out of burnout.
what matters most
The first episode scratches the surface of his inner turmoil by jumping into the isekai transition. It remains to be seen whether that aspect of the anime style will derail the entire story or whether it will actually find a way to metaphorically extend a connecting bridge to the real world. The Zenshu premiere serves its purpose as a visually stimulating jumping-off point into Natsuko’s journey, which should probably be more of an internal one than a fantasy escape that becomes about several other characters we don’t care about. Want to do.
The next episodes now have to accomplish the challenging task of tying up those ends by dealing with his meltdown in a way that has real-world implications. At the end of it all, expanding the fantasy should be a part of it, not the other way around. In an effort to fit its connection with the fictional outlet, the first episode hits the audience with a bag full of introductions. Overall, the show will find its way to success, so long as it remembers that Natsuko is someone we care about, not the bazillionth character introduced into the isekai world.
zenshu Episode 1 will begin streaming on Crunchyroll on January 5, 2025. New episodes will be released every Sunday.
