Now is the time to focus on a diet that can help improve brain health. A recent study led by Dr. Russell P. Sawyer of the University of Cincinnati suggests that the MIND diet may help boost the brain and improve the way it maintains memory.
The Mind Diet isn’t just another trend. It is a combination of two well-planned diets – the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet. MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. This diet includes a menu that helps promote brain health.

What does the MIND diet include?
According to the study, the MIND diet includes a serving of leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, colorful vegetables, whole grains, fish or poultry, a handful of nuts, a sprinkle of berries, and a drizzle of olive oil. The diet includes foods that are believed to promote brain health. It also bans the inclusion of foods that are not good for the brain. It is advisable to avoid fried foods, red meat, pastries and sweets. However, there is good news for those who enjoy the occasional alcoholic beverage – one glass of wine a day is approved for the diet.

Study findings:
This study was conducted on 14,145 people for ten years. The participants were asked to fill a form regarding the diet they follow. Based on this, they were divided into three groups – low, moderate or high adherence to the MIND diet recommendations.
After a decade, it was observed that people who adhered less to the MIND diet showed a greater tendency for cognitive decline than those who followed a diet closer to the MIND diet recommendations. After considering other factors such as age, high blood pressure and diabetes, it was observed that those who followed the MIND diet had a 4% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those who did not.
