While descending from Mount Everest, an Indian climber died due to high altitude (high altitude sickness). Officials have confirmed that this is the second death on the highest peak in the world in recent times.
According to the information received, 45 -year -old climber Subrata Ghosh of West Bengal died just below the Hillary step, which is considered a dangerous part near the peak of 8,848.86 meters (29,032 ft) high. According to The Himalayan Times, Ghosh was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar – Snoi Everest Expedition 2025 and he succeeded in reaching the summit on Saturday afternoon.
How did it die?
Bodhraj Bhandari, Managing Director of Snoi Horizon Treks, said, ‘Ghosh reached the summit at around 2 pm, but the symptoms of exhaustion and height disease started appearing while coming down. He finally refused to come down.
His Sherpa guide, Champal Tamang tried to convince him to get down, but he failed. Tamang alone returned to the camp IV late Thursday night and reported the incident on Friday morning. Ghosh’s body is still near Shikhar and efforts are on to bring it to the base camp. The exact cause of death will be known after post mortem examination.
Why is Hillary Step called Death Zone?
The Hillary Step ‘Death Zone’ is located in the death of the death- it is the area that is above 8,000 meters, where the oxygen level is very low. This part is considered extremely dangerous for climbers, especially during the final climb and return of the peak.

Earlier this week, another climber, 45 -year -old Filipino citizen Philip II Santiago, also died in South Coal. This camp is situated at a height just below the summit. According to the report, Santiago was extremely tired on reaching Camp IV on 14 May and died while resting in his tent.

Both Ghosh and Santiago were part of international campaigns organized by Snowy Horizon Trex. In this session, the tourism department of Nepal has issued 459 permits for climbing Mount Everest. Out of these, more than 100 climbers and guides have reached the summit. Only more than 50 climbers have successfully climbed the peak this week.
