Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, the Canadian actor best known for his notable Hollywood performances including Star Trek: Discovery, died Saturday at the age of 49 due to complications of ALS. His family members confirmed his death by sharing an official statement on social media.

“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son, and dear friend,” a statement on the Captain Marvel star’s Instagram post read. “Kane was widely known as an actor in many films and television shows. He has played an Olympic hopeful, an apocalypse survivor, an astronaut, the father of a superhero, and four unique Star Trekkers,” the statement continued.
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord. Over time, this condition causes progressive loss of muscle control. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the famous baseball star who suffered from the disease. Despite ongoing research, the exact cause of ALS is still unknown, while experts say some cases may be inherited.

Kenneth Mitchell was diagnosed with ALS

Famous for her performances in Captain Marvel, The Recruit, The Green, Miracle and other films, Mitchell received an ALS diagnosis in 2018 and began using a wheelchair the following year. The Star Trek community also honored Mitchell following his passing and expressed deep sadness at the news in a statement on StarTrek.com.
