A recent report in the Kerala Legislative Assembly revealed that 1,157 schools across the state have “disqualified” buildings for the operation of classes. The figures were shared by the Local Self Government Department (LSGD), even the state government is highlighting its efforts in upgrading the infrastructure of the school.

In response to a question raised by Karunagappalli MLA CR Mahesh, General Education Minister V. Shivkutty accepted the problem and said that the government is taking the issue seriously. He said in a written reply, “While construction plan funds of new school buildings are being used and through KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) projects, separate allocation is also being used for maintenance.”

In the district-wise data, Kollam is shown at the top of the list with 143 schools, which have unsafe buildings, followed by Alappuzha with 134 schools and Thiruvananthapuram with 120.

According to the current rules, all schools should secure fitness certificates from their respective local bodies before reopening each academic year. The latest number of students in Kerala can study in a safe environment, to ensure that the fresh number highlights rapid renewal and immediate requirement of safety check.

Zumba argued in schools

Even struggling with the infrastructure issues of the state’s infrastructure, Kerala has faced controversy over the introduction of Zumba dance in schools. The initiative launched in July was added to the syllabus as part of the government’s drug abuse campaign and its objective is to promote both physical fitness and mental welfare among students.

While many people have welcomed the move, it has also criticized. Supporters argue that the sessions help children deal with stress, while critics allege that they encourage inappropriate interaction between boys and girls.

Roma Mansoor, a certified international zumba fitness instructor, welcomed the initiative. “I am happy to say that the Kerala government has taken the initiative to promote Zumba in schools. It is a great initiative because nowadays children are accustomed to many things that are ruining their mindset. Zumba can help them rest their minds … It will help children to increase their confidence. As it is a calorie-business workout, it is also a good step …”

However, the protest increased after some religious groups voiced concerns. On June 28, Muslim organizations in Thiruvananthapuram objected to the practice, saying they could not accept boys and girls to dance or wear inappropriate clothes together.

The backlash intensified after TK Ashraf, a teacher and general secretary of the Wisdom Islamic organization, posted on Facebook that he and his sons would not participate. “It can’t accept it, and my son and I will not participate in,” he wrote.

Samastha Kerala Jamiathul Ulama leader Nasar Faizi Jumpthai also joined, criticizing the sessions as “inappropriate” and violation of students.

Government defends the trick

Despite criticism, the Kerala Education Department has defended the initiative, making it clear that participation is voluntary. Officials insisted that the Zumba program was part of a comprehensive effort to help children handle educational stress and keep them away from medicines.

Minister V. Shivnakutty stood firmly with this move and called the objections wrong. “No one has asked children to wear at least clothes. Children are wearing school uniforms and performing,” he said, “he said, protesting such activities will injected” poison which is more fatal than drugs “.

CPI (M) leader Ma Baby also supported the government’s stand, in which the backlash was rejected. He called the controversy “absolutely untrue”.
