With Maharashtra likely to go for assembly elections just three months from now, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar on Thursday sounded the poll bugle and said the MVA can win over 225 seats.
Elections for the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly are likely to be held in the month of October.
Sharad Pawar said Maharashtra is in the hands of wrong people and added that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (Shiv Sena), can win 225 seats.
Pawar made the remarks when former Udgir MLA Sudhakarrao Bhalerao and several of his associates joined the party at the Yashwant Rao Centre in Mumbai in the presence of him, NCP leaders Supriya Sule and Jayant Patil.
Former MLA Bhalerao, who had won from Udgir in Latur in 2009 and 2014, submitted his resignation to the BJP and then joined the NCP (SP).
Pawar said, “When the Maharashtra assembly elections are held in October, I think we can win more than 225 out of 288 seats. There is hope that there will be a change of power and we all should strive for this.”
Pawar further said that five years ago, only six MPs from opposition parties were elected to the Lok Sabha from Maharashtra. However, this time people also felt that the situation should change and opposition MPs emerged victorious on 31 out of 48 seats. Out of the 10 seats we contested, we won eight seats,” Pawar said.
Pawar asked NCP (SP) leaders and workers to take a pledge to make Maharashtra the most powerful state in the country with their collective strength.
Meanwhile, both the Maha Vikas Aghadi and Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, NCP (Ajit Pawar) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), have said they will fight the upcoming Assembly elections in alliance.
According to reports, the state BJP unit has told the central leadership that being the single largest party in the state, they should contest 180 seats. Leaders from the Ajit Pawar and Shinde camps have also said that they should get 80 to 100 seats.
Last month, Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam had urged Eknath Shinde to ask Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to give them 100 seats (for the assembly) and he will ensure that 90 seats are won. He also said that the BJP (state unit) stakes claim on seats as soon as the candidate is talked about and this has to be stopped.
Meanwhile, last week Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said they (Mahayuti alliance partners) have to walk together as the Opposition is ready to compromise among themselves, adding that an alliance survives only if you compromise.
After the Legislative Council elections, a meeting is likely to be held between leaders of both Mahayuti and MVA to discuss the assembly seat sharing formula.
