In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sandeep Arora, dermatologist at Apollo Spectra Delhi, Chirag Enclave, suggested, “To prevent hair fall in summer, make sure to protect the scalp from exposure to UV rays by covering the head with the help of a hat, scarf or umbrella. Do not style your hair frequently during summer (blow drying, hot iron, harsh colouring or any other hair treatment) as frequent damage to the hair can lead to hair breakage and thinning. It is good to wash your hair with warm or cold water. Do not alternate between very hot and very cold water. This will cause hygral fatigue and increase hair breakage.”

She further suggests, “Make sure to brush your hair only when it is completely dry. If you want to blow dry your hair, use a heat-protectant. Staying hydrated by drinking enough fluids can also help in healthy hair growth. Try to drink at least 3 litres of water per day. Include foods rich in vitamins A, C and E in your diet as these nutrients are essential for strengthening your hair. Use expert-recommended deep conditioning hair masks to avoid frizzy hair in summers. Most importantly, use hair care products like shampoos, conditioners and serums only after consulting a dermatologist who will recommend the one suitable for your hair type.”

Dr Sharifa Chausse, dermatologist and cosmetologist at Sharifa Skin Care Clinic, explained that there can be several reasons behind hair loss during the summer months, “One of the major reasons is exposure to the sun’s strong UV rays, which can weaken the hair shaft and cause breakage. High temperatures and humidity can lead to excessive sweating, which can lead to scalp issues such as dandruff and clogged pores, ultimately resulting in hair loss. The intense sunshine during summers can damage hair.”

He advised, “In such cases, use a hat or scarf to cover your hair to protect your hair. Avoid sun exposure unless necessary. Sun exposure can increase hair loss. Drink plenty of water. This keeps hair healthy. Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E for hair growth. Use natural hair oils. Apply conditioner on wet hair. Deep-conditioning hair masks will also help in hydrating and moisturizing the hair. Use a swimming cap while swimming in water. Because the chlorine present in water weakens the hair. Wash your hair three times a week.”
