Chocolate That Heals:

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Shikha Singh, nutritionist and fitness expert at ShixFitness, shared, “When chocolate is eaten carefully and in moderation, it can be beneficial for the body. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa and less sugar, is rich in antioxidants and minerals that are good for health. The darker the better, as higher cocoa content means more health benefits.”

He reveals, “Chocolate also helps release feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine, which help in stress management. During menstruation, if taken in moderate amounts, it helps reduce pain, control mood swings, and provide a natural source of comfort. Dark chocolate, in particular, has also been linked to improving heart health by lowering blood pressure and increasing circulation.

Dark chocolate can be added to cakes, pancakes, smoothies or any other dessert, which not only enhances the taste but also increases the nutrition. “It pairs well with nuts and berries, adding fiber and healthy fats to your snacks,” says Shikha Singh. However, since chocolate is high in calories, one should be very careful about portion sizes. Excessive consumption can lead to weight gain and even affect blood sugar levels. To strike the right balance between indulgence and health benefits, enjoy a piece or two, not the entire bar.”

Surprising Benefits of Dark Chocolate in Your Diet:

Chocolate contains cocoa solids, cocoa butter, milk solids and varying percentages of sugar, which give them different flavors. “Dark chocolate has higher cocoa content and lower sugar content, which gives them a bitter taste and enhances their flavour,” said Aman Puri, founder of Steadfast Nutrition. Being rich in cocoa, dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of polyphenols, antioxidants and flavonoids than regular milk chocolate, increasing its potential health benefits. When consumed in moderation, dark chocolate can be included in a normal day’s balanced diet as it offers many health benefits.

“It is loaded with flavonoids and polyphenols, which act as antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and the risk of chronic diseases,” he explains. The flavanols catechins and epicatechins found in cocoa beans reduce inflammation, improve cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure, thereby supporting heart health. They support the production of nitric oxide in the blood vessels which improves blood flow and relaxes the blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure. It may have protective effects, reducing the risk of developing heart diseases and stroke. The antioxidants and magnesium in cocoa protect cells from damage, reducing the risk of developing certain cancers, while minerals like selenium help strengthen the immune system.

“Including moderate amounts of cocoa or dark chocolate in your diet improves attention, memory and cognitive health, which may help improve mood and reduce the risk of developing depression,” explains Aman Puri. The antioxidant properties of cocoa help regulate blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing the risk of diabetes. However, chocolate contains some amount of sugar so it should be consumed with caution by diabetics, who can also choose sugar-free options. It is important to understand that excessive consumption of chocolate can lead to weight gain and increase the daily sugar and calorie intake in the diet. Moderation may be the key – consuming 15-20 grams of dark chocolate per day can help maximize the health benefits.
