Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced that reciting ‘Vande Mataram’ will be made mandatory in all educational institutions across the state. The Chief Minister gave this statement while addressing the ‘Ekta Yatra’ (Unity March) program in Gorakhpur.
Yogi Adityanath said there is no point in opposing ‘Vande Mataram’ and said opposing it was one of the reasons for the partition of India.
He further said, “We must include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in our discussions. We will make recitation of ‘Vande Mataram’ mandatory in all educational institutions across Uttar Pradesh so that every citizen of the state develops a sense of respect and devotion towards Mother India and the motherland.”
This announcement by Yogi Adityanath has come amid the political controversy over the national song. The controversy began when Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed last week that important verses from the 1937 song were removed.
Congress has demanded an apology from the Prime Minister for his remarks made on Friday, in which he had said that the seeds of division had been sown by removing the verses of ‘Vande Mataram’. PM Modi had also said that such ‘divisive mentality’ remains a challenge for the country.
Reacting to his comments, the Congress on Sunday alleged that the Prime Minister had insulted the Congress Working Committee (CWC) of 1937, which had issued a statement on the national anthem, as well as insulted Rabindranath Tagore.

Ramesh said that Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Volume 66, page 46 mentions a statement issued by the CWC on October 28, 1937, regarding ‘Vande Mataram’. He said that this statement was greatly influenced by Rabindranath Tagore and his advice.

“The Prime Minister has insulted this CWC as well as Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. “That they should have done so is shocking, but not surprising because the RSS played no role in our freedom movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi,” Ramesh said.
Congress reiterated its demand for an apology from PM Modi and said he should focus on addressing the everyday issues of the people instead of targeting historical figures. The Prime Minister made his remarks while inaugurating the year-long commemoration of ‘Vande Mataram’ to commemorate 150 years of the national song.
