Jaipur, June 25 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a telephone discussion on the Ferozepur feeder reconstruction project on Wednesday, which is an important joint initiative for the canal irrigation system in North -West Rajasthan.
According to an official statement, The 647.62 crore project, which aims to strengthen the gang canal system serving the districts of Sriganganagar and Hanumangar in Rajasthan, was approved by the Central Water Commission (CWC) during its 158th Advisory Committee meeting on 24 April.
Among the total project cost, Punjab will contribute 379.12 crore (58.54%) and Rajasthan 268.50 crore (41.46%).
Sharma confirmed that the Water Resources Department of Punjab has given the principle of funding of Rajasthan, and the proposal will be sent to the Central Government after review by the Finance Department of Rajasthan.
CM Sharma said, “The project will increase the current capacity of Firozepur feeder to 13,842 cusecs from 11,192 cusecs,” CM Sharma said that the increased monsoon water will help maintain the increased monsoon water which will move towards Pakistan, which will benefit more than 3.14 lakh hectares in Rajasthan.
The objective of the Rajasthan government is to start construction this year and the project is to be completed by 2027, Sharma said, in view of that A provision of Rs 200 crore has been made in the state’s 2024-25 budget for the initiative.
The project gained momentum after Sharma’s visit to Sriganganagar in April, where local farmers and representatives raised the issue. After the visit, Sharma interacted with the Union Water Power Minister, which gave approval by the CWC.
Sharma said that reconstruction is expected to improve irrigation, increase crop productivity and strengthen the agricultural economy of the region.
