Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s wife and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur on Thursday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Kaur was suspended from the Congress in February last year for alleged ‘anti-party’ activities.
However, Kaur did not clarify whether she would contest the Lok Sabha elections this year or not.
The four-time MP and former Union minister joined the saffron party at its Delhi headquarters in the presence of the senior BJP leader. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar was also present in this program, who himself was earlier a part of Congress.
After joining BJP, Kaur told reporters that she will continue her work under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He termed his time with the grand old party as a ‘good innings’ and said he looked forward to a better ‘innings’ with the saffron party.
Kaur said, “I will work for my constituency, my state and the country under the leadership of PM Modi. I had a good innings with the Congress party and I hope that my innings will be better with the BJP too.”
On whether she will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the MP said that it depends on BJP.
Kaur also praised PM Modi and his policies and said that she is confident that the country will be safe and progress under his leadership.
“I am happy that today I am joining BJP. Today is the time when everyone should come together and see the actions of PM Modi and his policies like ‘Vikas Bharat’ programme. I have full faith that its Under the leadership of PM Modi, we will be able to keep our country safe and take it forward.”
BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde welcomed Kaur to the saffron party and said that BJP is emerging in the minds of common Punjabis. He stressed that the inclusion of political leaders like Preneet Kaur will strengthen the BJP in Punjab.
Tawde said that Preneet Kaur is an MP who has proved her ability by working in many committees. “When such people come to BJP, especially in Punjab where public mindset is being formed against the state government, it makes us stronger. BJP is emerging in the minds of common Punjabis. Development of Punjab as per the wish of PM Modi. Will become stronger.” With Prenett Kaur ji.
Amarinder Singh left Congress and joined BJP in 2022. Subsequently, Kaur was suspended by the Congress for indulging in ‘anti-party activities’ and helping the BJP.
