Moscow. At least 70 people have been killed and 115 injured after some gunmen opened fire inside a large concert hall in the Russian capital Moscow. Russian Health Ministry head Murashko said that the condition of 60 of the injured was serious. Along with firing, these attackers also carried out bomb blasts, due to which a massive fire broke out in the concert hall. Due to this fire the roof of the concert hall collapsed.
The deadly attack came days after Russian President Vladimir Putin consolidated his grip on power after a landslide victory in the country’s elections. What happened to the gunmen involved in this attack? Till the time of writing this news, no clear information has been received about this. International terrorist group Islamic State has taken responsibility for this attack by issuing a statement on social media.
Islamic State said in a statement that it attacked a large gathering of ‘Christians’ in Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds. However, the authenticity of his claim could not be verified.
Actually ISIS has been active in Russia for the last few weeks. Earlier on March 7, Russia’s top security agency had claimed that it had foiled an attack on a synagogue in Moscow by an Islamic State cell.
A few days before this, Russian officials had said that 6 alleged members of ISIS were killed in a shootout in Ingushetia in Russia’s unstable Caucasus region.
Till now not much has been known about the attackers. However, officials claim that the attackers were wearing soldiers’ uniforms. Repeated gunshots can be heard in videos posted on Russian media and Telegram channels.
A video showed two men roaming around the venue with rifles. Four attackers armed with assault rifles were shooting people screaming in the concert hall at close range.
On the other hand, Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that if Ukraine’s involvement is proven, those involved will be found and killed without mercy.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has denied its involvement. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said his country has ‘never used terrorist methods’.
PM Modi has condemned this terrorist attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He wrote, ‘We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack in Moscow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. In this hour of grief, India stands in solidarity with the government and people of the Russian Federation.
Initial reports said three to five unidentified gunmen wearing body armor and armed with assault rifles opened fire indiscriminately at a Moscow mall on Friday, leading to a fire. These attackers targeted the people who came to the music festival and in the video of the incident, bodies are seen scattered all around. They also allegedly threw hand grenades to set the building on fire.
The Crocus City Mall is located in the Moscow region just outside the city limits. The security agency, FSB, is investigating this attack. Several ambulances as well as heavily armed police units were deployed to the scene. A helicopter has also been deployed to help extinguish the massive fire.
