What is the draconid meteor shower?
“The Draconid meteor shower comes from debris burning up in Earth’s atmosphere behind comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner,” NASA said. This meteor shower forms when Earth passes through dusty debris left behind by comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.
“The Draconids are very intense showers,” said Robert Lunsford, Fireball Report coordinator for the American Meteor Society, adding, “We go through the debris (from comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner) every few days on Earth, and the main maximum (activity) really only lasts a few hours. So it’s here and gone like that.”
This astronomical event that mesmerized sky-watchers occurred after October’s supermoon. According to EarthSky, the Draconid meteor shower reached its peak at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 8. The draconid shower lasted only a few hours and later in the night the moon blocked most visibility.
According to NASA, these meteors originate near the head of the constellation Draco in the northern sky and hence are named ‘Draconids’. When to see the Orionids meteor shower?
Time & Date said, “The Orionids are the second meteor shower in October. It usually peaks around October 21.”
The second meteor shower of the month, the Orionids, usually peaks around October 20 and 21, and at its peak, up to 20 meteor showers are visible every hour. The best time to view is from after midnight until dawn when the Orion constellation is high in the sky.
According to the time and date, the Orionid meteor shower is the second meteor shower produced by Halley’s Comet. The Eta Aquariids in May are another meteor shower made up of debris left behind by Comet Halley.
