The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Thursday announced a significant change in the national level entrance examination for engineering courses. There will be some new changes in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) pattern in the upcoming year.
NTA’s latest press release dated October 17 states that the optional question format in Section B will be discontinued. This option was introduced in 2021 as a relief measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
First, temporary amendment Candidates were allowed to attempt any five questions out of total 10 in this particular section. Flexible format option was available till the final JEE exam. However, the next JEE exam will return to the pre-pandemic exam pattern.
“The examination structure will revert to its original format, where Section B will have only 5 (five) questions per subject, and candidates will have to attempt all 5 (five) questions, without any option for selection in the JEE,” the release said. Questions will have to be attempted. (Main) 2025 for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B. Arch) and Paper 2B (B. Planning).
From JEE Main 2025, Section B will have only five numerical questions per subject. Therefore, all these questions must be answered compulsorily. This marks a return to the pre-2021 format.
Another notable announcement was made in the press release along with changes in the exam pattern format. It said that the application process for the first phase of JEE Main 2025 will start soon and its details will be available on the official website of NTA.
After Registration Process Upon commencement, interested candidates will be provided with more details regarding the exam pattern on the official website of NTA.

300 points jee main exam It consists of three sections: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There are a total of 90 questions, 30 in each section.
Section A of the three-hour examination consists of 20 multiple choice questions (MCQs) per subject. Keeping in mind the revised exam pattern, Section B will now have five compulsory questions.
There is negative marking for each wrong answer, as a result of which one mark will be deducted, while there will be four marks for each correct answer.
