In children, frequent cold and infections are common because their immune system is still in a developing phase. However, when they become severe, it may be related to the parents. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Ravi Malik, Pediatrics, MAMC, Founder and Medical Director, Malik Radix Healthcare said, “With schools, dears and outdoor exposure, children often get more ill than adults. But how much is it?” Also read Found cold symptoms? Here is when children should take a sick day from school

Dr. Ravi Malik further explained what is normal and what not, when children often suffer from cold and infection:

1. 6-8 winter can be normal for one year.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is specific for young children to experience 6-8 upper respiratory tract infections annually, especially if they go to school or daycare. They are mostly viral and are usually solved in 7-10 days.

2. Coughs that run beyond 4 weeks need to pay attention

If a cough is spread over four weeks, it is old and should be evaluated. Doctors look at the nature of cough, whether it is wet or drought, what triggers or makes it easier, and any kind of signs such as poor growth or wheezing.

3. Red flags that say for further tests

Constant wet cough, recurrent pneumonia, failure to grow, clubbing nails, coughing blood, or many rounds of antibiotics in a year are indications that deep issues can occur in playing. In such cases, checks such as blood tests, chest X-rays, spirometry, or even CT scans may be recommended. 4. Allergies and asthma are increasing

Childhood is a noticeable increase in bronchial asthma and allergies, such as allergic rhinitis or bronchitis, possibly due to pollution or urbanization. They often require long-term care with bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, or non-sanding antihistamines.

5. Inhalers and nebulisters are safe for children

While many parents hesitate to use them, inhalation therapy is often necessary for the management of asthma or allergic cough and can be safely used over time under medical guidance.

6. Avoid self-medication

Cough syrup and over-the-counter drugs should be avoided, especially in children under 6 months of age.
