Powerful earthquakes: From Chile to Japan, let’s take a look at the top 10 most powerful earthquakes that shake the world.

On July 30, 2025, it was recorded by 8.8 collecting earthquakes from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, ranking it among the 10 largest earthquakes recorded. The earthquake occurred around 11:25 pm, about 119 km south-east in the city of Petropavalovsk-Kampachtski. Powerful shocks triggers a tsunami that affects the coastal regions of Russia’s Kuril Islands and the northern island of Japan Hokkaido.
Six days later, on Tuesday, another earthquake was recorded in the same area with a magnitude of 6.0. The earthquake occurred at 1:57 pm local time, about 108 km from Petropavalovsk-Kampachatski.

In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake hit Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a large -scale tsunami, claiming more than 280,000 people’s lives and displaced 1.1 million people in South Asia and East Africa.
Tohoku, Japan – 2011
In 2011, Tohoku, Japan, a magnitude was killed by 9.1 earthquakes, known as the Great Tohoku earthquake. This resulted in over 15,000 deaths and displaced 130,000 people, leading to significant destruction.
Kamchatka Krai, Russia – 1952
The world’s first recorded magnitude 9 Earthquake occurred in 1952 in Dastak Krai, Russia. The earthquake generated a large -scale tsunami that reached Hawaii, causing more than $ 1 million damage.
Biobio, Chile – 2010
Biobio, Chile faced 8.8 earthquakes in 2010, killing 523 people and destroyed more than 370,000 houses.
Esmeraldas, Ecuador – 1906
In 1906, Esmeraldas, Ecuador, was killed by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, known as Ecuador-Kolmbia earthquake. It produced a strong tsunami in which 1,500 people were killed and reached the north as San Francisco.
Alaska, USA – 1965
In 1965, a magnitude 8.7 Earthquake in Alaska, the United States, allegedly made a tsunami 35 feet high.
Arunachal Pradesh, India – 1950
A magnitude 8.6 Earthquake in 1950 in Arunachal Pradesh, India, known as an Assam-Tibeta earthquake. It caused 780 deaths and produced intense tremors, sand blasts, ground cracks and large landslides throughout the region.
Sumatra, Indonesia – 2012
Indonesia, Sumatra, a magnitude in 2012 was killed by an earthquake 8.6, causing heavy shaking. Most of the casualties were attributed to a heart attack.
