Al Pacino’s adverse announcement of the final award at the 96th Academy Awards – Best Picture for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer – attracted attention, as he did not name the nominees for Best Picture. Al Pacino’s full statement
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, Al Pacino began his statement: “There appears to be some controversy over my not naming each movie last night before announcing the Best Picture award. I just want to clarify that it was not my intention to leave him out, but rather a choice by the producers not to mention him again as he was personally highlighted throughout the ceremony. I felt honored to be a part of this evening and decided to follow his wishes to present this award.”
The Godfather star further added, “I realize that being nominated is a big milestone in one’s life and to not be completely recognized is humiliating and hurtful. I say this as someone who has been deeply in love with filmmakers, Deeply connected with the actors and producers, so I deeply empathize with those people.” This mistake has been ignored, and that is why I felt it necessary to make this statement.
What happened at the Oscars?
During his presentation, Al proceeded to open the envelope and said, “Ten amazing films were nominated, but only one will take home the award for Best Film. For this I have to go in the envelope and I will go. It comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer. Yes. Yes.”
The nine other films nominated for Best Picture were American Fiction, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall. Oppenheimer won seven awards, including Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.
