With more than 2500 cases of mumps reported in Kerala in a month, the mumps outbreak is on the rise in the state, the Indian Express quoted a Union Health Ministry official as saying. 190 cases of the virus were reported in Kerala in a single day on Sunday, March 10. According to the report of English Daily, in view of the situation in the state, the National Center for Disease Control has been alerted in the state.
According to IE, 2,505 cases of viral infection have been reported in March. Whereas, about 11,467 cases have been reported in two months of 2024.
What is mumps?
Mumps is a viral infection caused by the spread of paramyxovirus. The virus can spread through direct contact with an infected person or through airborne droplets exhaled from the upper respiratory tract. A person suffering from mumps starts showing symptoms two to four weeks after becoming infected. One of the important symptoms of the disease is swelling of the salivary glands.
