Davos, Jan 21 (PTI) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday said the first visit of her new commission will be to India as she looks to upgrade the strategic partnership with the world’s “largest country and democracy”.
In a special address at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum here, he said the European Commission wants to see local industries flourishing in its partner countries as it is in its own interest as well.
“And, we have partners around the world, from Africa to the Indo-Pacific,” he added.
He announced, “The first visit of my new Commission will be to India. Together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we want to advance our strategic partnership with the world’s largest country and democracy.”
While the European Parliament re-elected him for a second term in July last year, the new Commission officially began work only recently. His current tenure will continue till 2029.
He added, “I believe we also strive for mutual benefit as we interact with China. All continents must deal with the growing burden of climate change and the impacts are impossible to ignore.”
He assured that the Paris Agreement remains humanity’s best hope and that Europe will remain on this path.
The President said that the world has entered a new era of intense geo-strategic competition. Breaking the bonds in the global economy is not in anyone’s interest, he said.
“Europe will continue to seek cooperation from our old friends and any country with which we share interests,” he said.
