The Delhi High Court passed this order while disposing of a petition seeking 50 per cent reservation for women in DUSU elections.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi University Vice Chancellor to decide on a representation seeking reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that the representation made by the petitioner to the university authorities in October 2023 be decided by the Vice-Chancellor in accordance with law as early as possible and preferably within three weeks.
The court passed this order while disposing of a petition demanding 50 per cent reservation for women in DUSU elections.
Petitioner Shabana Hussain, represented by advocate Ashu Bidhuri, submitted that student union elections are highly influenced by money and muscle power, resulting in minimal participation of women.
Hussain said in view of these concerns, they have approached the High Court seeking an order to ensure representation of women through reservation in the student union elections scheduled to be held on September 27. The nomination process is scheduled to begin on September 17.
The petitioner said there is a need for gender equality in student elections and also sought direction to the university to comply with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.
Following the Supreme Court order, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry constituted a committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner JM Lyngdoh to make recommendations on issues related to student bodies and students union elections in universities, colleges and other higher education institutions across India.
The committee submitted its report on 26 May 2006.
