The top body of Muslim clerics in India, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, is holding a protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Janta Manti in the national capital today on 17 March. The board said that the proposed law was a “direct attack” on Muslims and paved the way for “USRP” of Waqf qualities.
“The Muslim community sees this Waqf Amendment Bill as a direct attack on the community,” AIMPLB said in a statement last week.
The protest is going to start at 10 am. According to a statement issued by AIMPLB, this protest will be attended by the board representatives, leaders of major Muslim religious and social organizations, activists of civil society and major Dalits, tribal and OBC leaders.
“Bill for discrimination”
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposed amendments of TheQF (Amendment) Bill, including the changes recommended by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). Approval paves the way for the bill for the bill in Parliament in the second half of the budget session starting on 10 March.
The bill is the amount for “discrimination” as it asks for having non-Muslim members in WAQF boards and councils, when there is no such provision in the management of Hindus and Sikhs, Syed Qasim Rasul Ilis, spokesperson of AIMPLB said.
Theunion Cabinet, it has been learned, has included most changes recommended by JPC, headed by BJP leaderjgambika Pal. The panel approved the bill on 27 January, adopting all the 14 changes proposed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -Ledndamembers.
Jagdambika Pal, BJP MP and JPC president criticized the AIMPLB for their planned protest against the bill, claiming that it could create partitions and challenge Parliament’s rights to enact laws. Pal said that AIMPLB had already presented its concerns before the committee, and those points were taken into consideration in the report.
“The Joint Parliamentary Committee and Waqf called AIMPLB before the committee after this amendment. We took cognizance of the things revealed by AIMPLB before the committee. Not only this, we have also made it a part of our report … So they are going to protest in Janta Manti in Delhi? … After the amendment, a better law is going to be made … poor, women, widows and children will also benefit from Waqf, “Pal told news agency Annie.
AIMPLB general secretary Fazlur Rahim Mujadidi said that the board tried to convince the government through all democratic means, but their concerns were not heard.
“Now, we have no option but to go to a protest. The government wants to implement this amendment at any cost. We do not want the situation to deteriorate, but you (the government) want to struggle in every road and neighborhood, especially on mosques and cemeteries. Mujadidi said.
They are trying to confuse people and make differences.
However, Pal accused AIMPLB of trying to mislead people. “If they are going to protest against this Waqf (amendment), somewhere they are trying to create hatred among the people of the country and challenge the right to make laws of Parliament … They are trying to confuse people and make differences … This step taken by them is not democratic,” Annie said.
