One of these places is Palhneshwari Mata’s Palhana Devi Temple. It is about 40 km from Azamgarh district headquarters. This temple is quite ancient and devotees from far and wide come here with their wishes. The temple courtyard is always full of devotees. Darshan fulfills the wishes of the devotees here.
History of mythological beliefs
This temple of Palhneshwari Mata located in the Mehanagar region of Azamgarh, which is known as Palhana Devi, is very ancient. According to the Puranas, this temple has special recognition. The temple priest Radheshyam Mishra says that when King Daksha did not invite his daughter Sati to the yagna, Mother Sati felt humiliated and consumed herself in the Yagya Kund. After this, Lord Shiva got angry and picked up the body of Mother Sati and visited the three worlds. This incident spread anarchy in the three worlds, to prevent which Lord Vishnu made four pieces of Mother Sati’s body with his Sudarshan Chakra. One of these pieces fell in Palhna in the metropolis of Azamgarh, where this temple of Mata Palhneshwari Devi is seated as Shaktipeeth.
Witness of Ashwamedha Yajna
The mention of Palhmeshwari Dham is found in ancient texts like Veda, Purana and Mahabharata. This dham is also mentioned in the seventh chapter of the second section of the Padma Purana. Maharishi Vishwamitra has also described the glory of Mother in the Balakand of Ramcharitmanas. Additionally, Maharaja Sagar performed Ashwamedha Yajna here. It is described in the forest festival of Mahabharata that when the Pandavas were in exile, Narada ji told Dharmaraja Yudhishthira about this place and he came here.
Lord Buddha’s feet
Lord Buddha came here with his disciples. It is mentioned in written texts in Pali language. According to the book ‘Bhojpage’, Raja Bhoj performed the yajna here. This place has been important since ancient times from religious and historical point of view. The temple priest Radheshyam Mishra says to Local 18 that there is a crowd of devotees in the temple throughout the year. A special fair is organized here in Navratri, which increases the number of devotees even more. This temple is one of the four major Shaktipeeths, where the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled by visiting.
