The Union Education Ministry on June 19 cancelled the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (NET) after concerns were raised over the integrity of the exam. UGC-NET 2024 was conducted on June 18 in 317 cities.

The decision to cancel UGC-NET comes amid the ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam – NEET. Both the exams are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Police of Bihar and Gujarat are investigating the alleged leak of NEET-UG 2024 question paper.
The NEET-UG 2024 case has reached the Supreme Court. The next hearing on the alleged irregularities during the exam will be held on July 8.
The chronology of events relating to the dispute is as follows:
21 June: The Supreme Court once again refused to stay the NEET-UG 2024 counselling process. The apex court has issued notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The apex court tagged the new petitions with the pending petitions and fixed July 8 as the date of hearing on them.

20 June: Anurag Yadav, a 22-year-old NEET UG 2024 aspirant, was arrested by the Bihar Police after he confessed that the leaked question paper he had received matched the one on the actual exam., The arrests were made as part of a larger investigation in which four people from Bihar were also detained for allegedly obtaining the exam question paper a day before the exam.
20 JuneCongress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid the ongoing controversy over the NEET-UG results and the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam, saying that the Prime Minister is more concerned about the election of the Speaker. 18 JuneThe Supreme Court has issued a notice to the NTA seeking its response on petitions related to alleged paper leaks and irregularities in NEET-UG 2024. The apex court said that even if there is a slight negligence in NEET-UG 2024, it should be dealt with completely. The Supreme Court said, “If there is 0.001% negligence on someone’s part, then it should be dealt with completely. The children have prepared for the exam. We cannot forget their hard work.”

June 15: The ABVP delegation, led by national secretary Shivangi Kharwal, Virendra Solanki and others, submitted a memorandum to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding the NEET-UG exam issue and the resulting troubles faced by students.
13 JuneThe uproar over the NEET UG results has reached the Supreme Court. Several petitions have been filed in this matter, demanding cancellation of the exam. In the first hearing, the Supreme Court sought a response from the NTA. The Supreme Court refused to stay the NEET UG counseling process. The Supreme Court was told that the Center has decided to cancel the grace marks given to 1,563 students in the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The government had then said that if the affected students decide to take the exam again, it will be held on June 23. The result of those students will be declared before June 30 and counseling will begin from July 6.
June 4: The NTA declared the NEET UG 2024 results on June 4, the day of counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Soon after the results were declared, students and parents took to the streets to protest the unusual results and the granting of grace marks to around 1,500 students. When it was found that 67 students had topped the exam, the students started demanding rechecking and re-evaluation of all the marks.

May 5, 2024: The NTA conducted the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on May 5. The NEET exam was held for 24 lakh students at 4,750 centres in 571 cities across India. There were allegations of paper leak at the centres during the exam, which was rejected by the NTA and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The NTA and the Centre clarified that Hindi and English medium question papers were mixed at six centres. However, the government said it has been rectified and students have been given extra time to complete the NEET exam.
