Many students stay in Kenyan boarding schools because their parents believe it gives them more time to study.

A fire at a school dormitory in Kenya killed 17 students and left 13 others with serious burn injuries, police said on Friday. The death toll was expected to rise, police said. Police spokeswoman Rasila Onyango said the cause of the fire at Hillside Andarasha Primary in Nyeri county on Thursday night was being investigated.

“We are investigating the cause and will take necessary action,” he said.

Fires are common at Kenyan boarding schools, where many students live because their parents believe it gives them more time to study.

Some arson incidents have also been committed by students during unrest. In 2017, 10 high school students died in a fire at a school in the capital, Nairobi.
