London. After 103 years of independence, Ireland has got its first Prime Minister. Michelle O’Neill, vice-president of Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein party, was on Saturday elected as the country’s first minister i.e. Prime Minister. He will have to share power with DUP party leader and First Deputy Minister i.e. Deputy Prime Minister Emma Little-Pengelly. Both have been given equal status, but O’Neill’s post will be more prestigious.
For the first time, the ‘Good Friday’ peace agreement of 1998 has been followed to give the country its own power. Under this, an agreement was reached regarding sharing of power between the two main communities of Northern Ireland. Those wishing to remain in the United Kingdom (UK) were called ‘British Unionists’ and those wishing to remain with Ireland were called ‘Irish Nationalists’. Now both these groups have agreed, due to which O’Neill’s Irish government has been formed.

O’Neill is the first Irish nationalist to become First Minister of Northern Ireland. Following the independence of the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland was united with the UK in 1921, but there was an agreement on governance between the two unions. Under this agreement, one party could not rule without the consent of the other.
O’Neill will have to share power with DUP party leader and First Deputy Minister (Deputy Prime Minister) Emma Little-Pengeley. Both will have equal status, but O’Neill’s post will be more prestigious because his party won more seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 2022.

O’Neill (47) wrote on ‘X’, ‘This is a historic day. As the first minister of all, I promise to work with others to bring positive change for all and take our society forward in the spirit of respect, cooperation and equality.
