Let’s be honest, no one applies lipstick thinking about eating it for lunch. But the truth is that we consume more of it than we think. By wearing lipstick on every sip of coffee you drink or every slice of pizza you eat, you are actually eating most of it. Products like lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm and even foundation can easily end up in your mouth during normal daily activities, with lip products being the main culprit.Facial products may also contribute indirectly. If you touch your face and then eat without washing your hands, the makeup on your hands can transfer to food, utensils or drinks. Additionally, airborne particles from the powder can be inhaled and later swallowed.

“Daily use of lipsticks and lip balms can lead to ingestion of 20-40 mg, which is not trivial when accumulated over months,” cosmetologist, Dr Gagan Raina, medical and clinical director of Arisia Skin Clinic, tells HT ShopNow.She further adds that although most cosmetics are safe when used in small quantities, they are not meant for regular consumption.

Dr. Raina mentions concerns about long-term, low-level exposure to some chemicals in cosmetics. ,Small amounts of heavy metals like lead, cadmium and nickel can accumulate in the body and affect the nervous system and hormones,” she explains.

She further explains that some mineral oils can remain in body tissues for a long time, and scientists are still studying their long-term health effects. Some preservatives, such as parabens and BHA/BHT, are also being studied for possible links to hormone disruption and inflammation.

What are the long-term effects of chlorpyrifos exposure?

Dr Raina claims that although regulated products keep these within acceptable limits, their frequent consumption over the years is still a health concern. “The greatest risk comes from unregulated or counterfeit products, where contaminant levels are unpredictable and often unsafe,” she explains.

This doesn’t mean that you should stop wearing makeup completely. But being careful can make a difference. Washing your hands before eating, avoiding excessive reapplication of lip products, and choosing high-quality makeup can help reduce unintentional ingestion while allowing you to enjoy makeup safely.
