Those who live with chronic illness are expected to deal with their symptoms, brush their pain carelessly and hurt their mental goodness.
A person with chronic disease is already difficult to manage his day with his illness, but an Australian study highlighted another regular challenge. Apart from physical pain, they also tolerate high mental crisis. The study found that their symptoms are often ignored or rejected by family members and doctors, either due to lack of understanding or the perception that they should simply cope with it. This dismissal causes stress and spoils their mental health.

Dismissal damages mental health
The study included participants who had conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, endometriosis and arthritis. Most of them are women and more than 70% of them have been dealing with their illness for five years.
The most striking discovery is that pain and fatigue are not taken seriously by both family members and doctors. This invalid is not good for their mental health.
The study further explained how these people with chronic diseases hear ‘pain in your head’ or ‘you do not look sick’. This is harmful because they feel guilty and start doubting themselves, spoiling the psychological crisis.
It is particularly disappointing to dismiss pain or other symptoms from a family member, usually, people turn to the family for support. It may soon move forward at a point where the patient stops expressing himself or asks for support, affecting their overall goodness.
Awareness requires
Researchers emphasized the need for awareness about chronic disease, both in social and medical community.
The study author Thomas Wolduis said, “Improvement in understanding and reducing the stigma related to these conditions can not only promote more supportive environment for patients, but can also improve health results.”
