Cancer often starts quietly, with subtle signs that many people miss. Recognizing these early symptoms can help save lives. Dr. Jayesh Sharma, consultant surgical oncologist at ITSA Hospital, Raipur, in his November 1 Instagram post, shared the most common cancers in India and the early warning signs that should never be ignored. Which early warning signs should you never ignore?
Dr. Jayesh explains, “This first swelling is not normal, if any swelling, wound or ulcer inside the mouth does not heal even after several weeks, it can be an early warning sign of oral cancer.” He emphasized that such symptoms are often dismissed as minor infections or ignored altogether, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Sharma adds, “Another important sign to look out for is abnormal bleeding. Do you know how old movies used to show someone coughing and spitting blood on a handkerchief? This is actually a danger sign for lung cancer. These small but important signs can help in early detection if we pay attention.”
Which cancer is most common in Indian women?
She explained that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in India for women, and one of its early indicators is abnormal or persistent vaginal bleeding. “It is not about creating fear but about awareness. If you notice bleeding that does not align with your normal cycle or occurs after menopause, it is advisable to consult a doctor,” he advises.
However, Dr Sharma cautions against jumping to conclusions. “Don’t panic, everyone experiences bleeding gums or irregular periods occasionally. This does not mean it is cancer. The difference is in persistence and recurrence. If a symptom recurs repeatedly, your body is trying to tell you something. Early intervention can save lives,” he adds.
He concluded by urging people to listen to their bodies and get tested on time. “Cancer rarely starts with pain; it starts with small changes. Recognizing those signs early can make a big difference.”
