First, let’s break how sunscreen works. Artemis Hospitals Advisor, Dermatology and Cosmetology Dr. Shifa Yadav unpacked science behind sunscreen and SPF really means for your skin.

He said, “Sunscreen can be considered as an invisible shield that uses your skin to protect themselves from harmful sun rays. They are not only limited to tanning prevention; rather, their main purpose is to avoid any type of damage. The risk of sunburn and skin cancer is greatly increased.”

In addition, Dr. Shifa Yadav shared a detailed guide how enough SPF is:

How much SPF is sufficient?

  • SPF Conservation Range: Sun protection factor, or SPF, is a convenient remedy that a sunscreen protects your skin. For example, SPF 30 protects your skin from about 97%UVB rays, SPF protects from 50 98%, and SPF 100 can protect from about 99%.
  • High spf, high security? So, SPF 100 is really the best option? no way. Research suggests that at least 30 SPF is sufficient for most people. While high SPFs provide a little more protection, the difference is not important. In fact, SPF can give you a false sense of safety on the basis of 100, allowing you to proceed to stay in the sun without re -applying. The trick is not just picking up a sunscreen with a high SPF, but using it correctly.
  • Right sunscreen application: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen 15 minutes before going out in the sun, and if you are swimming or sweating, apply it again every two hours. If you use the right sunscreen and make it a habit, you can have fun in the sun while preserving your skin.

Comprehensive spectrum protection

Now that we are done with SPF, you may probably come with the word broad spectrum. A common misunderstanding is that people often focus on SPF number when choosing sunscreen. But true security lies in combination with both SPF and broad-spectrum coverage.

Skincare brand CEO and founder Malini Edaparddi, Dickstract, explained, “The most effective sunscreen is one that provides wide-spectrum security against both UVA and UVB rays. While UVB rays are the reason for the burn, it is UVA-raise, which is like a country, which is a country alone. Are, but the real measures of safety lies on the fact that a sunscreen protects the skin.

A complete unwanted daily is required with so much conversation around sunscreen, what about children? More than adults, children are unsafe for sun damage due to their sensitive skin. Which sunscreen is best suited for children? Should your children also apply sunscreen?

Bodycraft Clinic and Salon founder and head dermatologist Dr. Mikki Singh emphasized the importance of sunscreen for children. He said, “Yes, children should use sunscreen completely. The protection of the early sun helps prevent long -term skin damage, and reduces the risk of skin cancer later in life.”

Dr. Singh shared a guide for parents, which helped them guide the use of sunscreen for children:

  • Avoid sunscreen for children under 6 months old: Use shade, hats and protective clothes instead.
  • For 6 months and older, sunscreen is safe and recommended.
  • Choose physical/mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, gentle, non-thinking and effective.
  • See SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum and fragrance-free.
  • Use cream or lotion (not spray) to ensure coverage.
  • Water-resistant options are ideal for external sports or swimming.
  • Apply 15-20 minutes before the sun exposure and apply again every 2 hours or after sweat/swimming.
