Separating is not a negative feature and nothing to catch you back. On World Autism Awareness Day, we talk to two mothers with autistic children because they shared their stories of their challenges while nurturing their sons and the journey of difficulties that bloomed in beautiful, because they moved forward.
Anupama Bakhshi – Pranav Bakhshi
As a mother, for Anupama Bakshi, she says that she has won in her child’s nutritional journey, as Pranav Bakshi (now a model) has become independent despite everything that comes before her in her life. For him, his disability is his superpower.
Growing up, Anupama had to take maximum advantage of any situation while taking care of Pranava. ‘Nine’s sleepless, cries, cries and what not, and I realized much later that there was no right path to be as a mother, “she remembers. She firmly believed that being a mother, especially as a special child, brought in a lot of ownership and accountability, which is in the size that is today.
“Every child is different, even if they are on the autism spectrum. There is no set rule or mandate while raising that child. You just need to be patient with them, even if they are not listening, and learn with them, and learn with them,” she notes.
Autistic children are also born with some skill sets, and they have their own talents. Anupama believes that children absorb everything near their surroundings, whether negative or positive, and that they apply to their own symptoms. “My biggest achievement today is that Pranava wants to be independent and does not require her mother for day -day activities,” she says, “it is a full cycle moment that she can now be a voice for young children who are on spectrum, they have their support in themselves.”
Sukriti Talwar – Shivraj Talwar
For mother Sukriti Talwar, it came as a shock when she came to know that her son, Shivraj Talwar, had come to know about autism. Initially, as a child, he was not so different from other children, but as he grew up, differences appeared more.
“I think she had to face the biggest challenge as a child and was friends. He was separated from the children around the children, and the spirit of exit for a long time was abandoned,” she remembers.
She believes that other children should always include special children in their groups so that they learn inclusion at an early age. They should understand that autism is not a disease, but a train that some children have to grow. “For Shivraj, she is now confident and safe, and autism has never put her back. Even though it was a very lonely journey, she has come out of it,” she says.
According to Sukriti, other people around special children need to be slightly more sympathetic, being patient and accept them who they are. “These children do not require mercy; they need acceptance,” she says.
