Have you ever noticed how your body reacts instinctively under pressure, ready to deal with whatever comes your way? That’s cortisol at work – a hormone that can be both your greatest ally and enemy, depending on how well it’s managed.

Actress Amy Schumer recently spoke about her struggle with Cushing’s syndrome, a condition caused by excessive cortisol production. She shared how it affected her health, saying in an interview, “My body had changed in ways I couldn’t explain, and I finally found out why.” His story highlights the important role of cortisol in managing stress and its potential harm when out of balance. So, let’s learn what cortisol is, why it matters, and how you can make it work for you instead of against you.

What is cortisol?

Often called the “stress hormone,” cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands and plays a key role in your body’s response to stress. Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant – Dermatology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, says, “It does more than you know, including regulating metabolism, supporting memory and reducing inflammation. When functioning properly, cortisol acts like an internal superhero, helping you stay alert, energetic, and balanced throughout the day.

Consider cortisol as the body’s helper in times of need. “Whenever your body or brain feels the need to adapt to a challenge or threat, cortisol gets activated,” says Dr Amit Bhushan Sharma, director and unit head, cardiology, Paras Health Gurugram. Even small stressors, such as running or dealing with traffic, can trigger cortisol release. Additionally, situations that make you feel threatened, unsafe, or uncertain, real or perceived, can activate this response.

Your body’s built-in hero

While cortisol is essential, balance is important here. “In moderation, cortisol is an essential hormone that plays multiple roles in maintaining bodily functions. It increases glucose levels in the bloodstream to provide energy, regulate the sleep-wake cycle and support the immune response,” says Sharma. These functions are important in helping the body respond to and recover from stress.

What happens when your cortisol levels increase?

A temporary spike won’t hurt you, but when stress becomes a regular part of life, and cortisol levels remain high for too long, trouble can arise. “Cortisol is a double-edged sword. In the short term, this is incredibly beneficial but when cortisol levels remain elevated for a long period of time, it can be harmful,” explains Sharma.

In the short term, such as when you’re facing a tough deadline or running late, cortisol impairs your focus and keeps you reactive. But chronic stress — whether it’s from work, relationships, or poor sleep — can keep cortisol levels high, which can wreak havoc on your body. “Prolonged overeating leads to weight gain, weakened immunity, disrupted sleep and even memory problems. What starts as an ally becomes a constant rival,” says Sharma. In short, something that is designed to help you can turn into something that can harm you if it gets out of balance.

Stress can also be visible on your face. High cortisol levels not only impact your body or how you feel, but also how you look.

What is cortisol doing to your skin?

Stress can also be visible on your face. High cortisol levels not only affect your body or how you feel, but also how you look. “When cortisol increases, it triggers excess oil production, which can lead to acne. It also disrupts the skin barrier, leading to dehydration, irritation and sensitivity. “Chronic stress slows down collagen production, speeds up aging and makes fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable,” says Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, senior dermatologist and consultant at Max Hospital, Saket.

Tips to keep cortisol under control

The dual nature of cortisol lies in its delicate balance, too little of which can make you tired and unmotivated, while too much of it can stress both the body and mind. The key is to learn to manage it effectively, so you can harness its benefits without falling victim to its negative aspects. Here are some simple but effective strategies for maintaining healthy cortisol levels.

Stick to a regular sleep schedule and develop a relaxing bedtime routine.

Regular physical activity helps, but avoid excessive training, which can aggravate.

Try meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to calm your nervous system.

Focus on whole foods and avoid skipping meals to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Say no to unnecessary commitments and make time for self-care.
