New Delhi. The place that Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’ created in the hearts of the audience has not been touched by any other show till date. This serial based on Ramayana took the story of Lord Ram to every home. Today, 29th December, is the birth anniversary of Ramanand Sagar, the creator of this great work, who brought Indian culture alive on screen.
Luv and Kush’s innocence won hearts
The characters of Luv and Kush were very important in the Uttar Kanda of ‘Ramayana’. Ramanand Sagar first thought of casting actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s twin sons (Luv and Kush Sinha) for these roles. But, due to some reasons this was not possible. After this, Sagar started looking for child actors and his eyes fell on two young boys from Maharashtra, Swapnil Joshi (the character of Kush) and Mayuresh Kshetramade (the character of Luv). Both of them won the hearts of the audience with their innocent faces and brilliant acting.
Child artists used to refuse to shoot
In an interview, Ramanand Sagar had mentioned the funny incidents that happened on the sets with these child actors. Sagar had told, ‘Some artists of Delhi harassed me a lot. What happened was that while going to Kanpur, I saw ‘Luv Kush’ written on a taxi and out of curiosity I asked the taxi driver and he told that it is the name of our owner’s children. Those boys were called for test. The age of both of them was exactly equal to the character of Luv-Kush. After passing the test, Sagar felt that both of them were very mischievous and if they were devils, they would also be good actors. But as soon as the shooting started, difficulties increased. After coming to the set, both of them would get ready and sit down, but as soon as the camera was on, they would say – we will not work.
Ramanand Sagar used Jugaad
Ramanand Sagar had further said, ‘The first two days passed like this. I don’t get angry anyway, so I thought I would have to use my brain some more. Then I staged a drama on the set – just to show off, I beat two men with sticks and even broke a table. This made the boys feel that if they did not do their work, they too would be beaten. Little work was done that day. But surprisingly, the next day both of them came again, but with sticks in their hands! He said – We also have sticks, if we do something…’.
Controlled both children through snake
He had told that at that time snakes were brought for shooting. The mouth of the basket remained open and the snake came out. Seeing this both the boys got scared. I took advantage of this – where they started mischief, I would open the lid of the snake’s basket. The boys immediately agreed and started speaking the dialogues. If I told them to exercise, they would start immediately. With this snake trick, both were controlled and the shooting was completed smoothly.
