New Delhi. Meta has recently released several upgrades for its popular instant messaging app WhatsApp. Besides, the company had also made many changes in this app. One of the major changes was regarding shifting to chat backup storage. The company had announced in its updated terms and conditions last year that from the beginning of January 2024, the dedicated space of WhatsApp will no longer be used for chat backup. Whereas, Google Drive will be used in its place and now when the first month of the new year is about to end, WhatsApp has transitioned to Google Drive for chats and media backup. This means that now you will have to keep the storage free or pay for additional storage.
Now whether you use paid or free plan of Google Cloud Service. WhatsApp chat backups will be saved in your Google Drive. This will be the same account which is the Gmail account linked to your WhatsApp. That means, apart from your Google Photos and Gmail, WhatsApp will also start filling up your Google Drive storage.

These are the options
However, if you have not paid for the Google Drive account and you want to use WhatsApp Beta. They also want chat backups to use up your entire Google Drive storage space. So you can select the option of not backing up chats in the cloud service. Instead, you can use the in-built WhatsApp chat transfer tool while switching to a new phone.
However, for this chat transfer, both the old and new phones will need to be in the same Wi-Fi network. Also, it will not require an active internet connection. The alternative way is that you can buy additional storage space on Google Drive by subscribing to Google One plan.
There is also an option that you can leave images and videos while backing up WhatsApp chat history. Because, this increases the size of your backup. If you want, you can check that WhatsApp has started the backup process in Google Drive. You can see this by going to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Backup.
For your information, let us tell you that iPhone has been dependent on iCloud storage for chat backup for a long time and now the same rule is being applied for Android also.
