New Delhi: The news about the potential existence of aliens and our possibilities of finding them often comes. We are often told that we can find them anytime. In September 2023, it was said that finding life outside the earth is “just a matter of time”. Then there was a headline of September 2024 “We are close”.

According to the report of The Conversation, it is easy to understand why. Headlines like “We are probably not close” or “no one knows” are not very clicked. But when the entire expert community is seen, what do they really think? Are optimistic predictions common or rare? Is there any agreement on this? Research said between February to June 2024, four surveys were conducted about the possible existence of basic, complex and intelligent aliens. Scientists sent emails to astrobiologists (scientists who study aliens) and scientists from other fields, such as biologists and physicists.

86.6% Astrobiologist accepted the existence of Alien?
Overall, 521 astrobiologists responded, and 534 non-astrobiologists received reactions. The results suggest that 86.6% astrobiologist replied to “agree” or “firmly” that there is a possibility of aliens (at least basic types) in the universe. Less than 2% disagreed, while 12% took a neutral approach. So on this basis, the scientist said that in some form or the other, there is a concrete consent on the existence of aliens.

Scientists who were not an astrobiologists in research also showed almost equal agreement. It had 88.4% consensus in total. In other words, astrobiologists are not biased to believe in the existence of aliens compared to other scientists. Scientists said that when we talk about “complex” aliens or “intelligent” aliens, our results were 67.4% and 58.2% agreed, respectively for astrobiologists and other scientists. So, scientists believe that aliens exist, even in more advanced forms.

The results make it even more important that disagreement in all categories was low. For example, only 10.2% astrobiologist disagreed with the claim that intelligent aliens probably exist. Scientists said that usually, we should only focus on scientific consent when it is based on evidence (and lots). Since there is no concrete evidence, scientists can guess. However, scientists had the option of “neutral”, which some scientists felt that they would speculate.
