Hematuria means the presence of blood in the urine. It can be microscopic, very obvious or not visible at all. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Mukund Andankar, urologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said, “Hematuria means the presence of blood in the urine. It can be enough to change the colour of the urine (gross hematuria) or so small that it can only be seen under a microscope (microscopic hematuria).”

Hematuria: causes
The urologist explains the causes of hematuria – urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney stones, tumors or cancer in the bladder or kidney, enlargement of the prostate, excessive exercise and injury to the kidney or urinary tract.
Hematuria: early symptoms
– blood in the urine, which may be pink, red or cola-colored
– Pain or burning when urinating
– Frequent urge to urinate
– pain in your lower back or side
– Fever (if there is an infection)
– blood clots in your urine

Hematuria: Treatment Options
Treatment options for hematuria depend on the diagnosis and cause. Diagnosis involves checking blood and urine and performing imaging tests, such as ultrasound or CT scans. In some cases, tests may also be done to look inside the bladder with a small camera (cystoscopy) and perform a biopsy.
For infectionAntibiotics are prescribed to cure the infection.
For the stonesPain medication, drinking plenty of fluids, and possibly a procedure to remove the stone are recommended.
For tumorsAfter diagnosis, treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation are prescribed.
For enlarged prostateDepending on the severity of the condition, the doctor recommends medication or surgery.
Hematuria: prevention measures
Drinking WaterThe urologist recommended drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep the body healthy.
Avoid strenuous exerciseDoing too much strenuous exercise can cause blood in the urine. Therefore, we should consult an expert before starting exercise.
Avoid smokingSmoking and tobacco consumption should be completely stopped, as they cause cancer. Cancer can also cause hematuria.
