The trailer for Todd Phillips’ psychological crime thriller Joker: Folie à Deux has left fans with the right amount of intrigue. But if you have some unanswered questions about Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s romance, we’ve got you covered. (Also Read – Joker Folie a Deux: Impressed by the last shot of the trailer? Well, Kamal Haasan did it first in Aalavandhan)
What does the title mean?
Joker 2’s title, Folie à Deux, literally means “a delusion or mental illness suffered by two people in close company.” And the trailer is based on exactly that – Arthur Fleck is no longer alone. He is joined by Harley Quinn, who contacts him in prison, claiming that she looks up to him, and prompts him to escape.
Why is it called ‘Ha Ha Land’?
Since the trailer’s release, the Internet has dubbed the film “Ha Ha Land.” This is a reference to Damien Chazelle’s 2016 Oscar-nominated musical romance, La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Since music and dancing are at the center of the Joker sequel, the Internet has chosen some frames that remind them of La La Land, but for “crazy people.” One user even called Joker: Folie à Deux “Ga Ga Land” in honor of Lady Gaga.
Is it really musical?
A report from Variety claims that Joker: Folie à Deux is a jukebox musical featuring over 15 popular songs. While the music is by Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Gudnadóttir, Lady Gaga is also likely to perform a few songs. The cover of This Is Entertainment, a tune from the 1953 show Band Wagon, is also likely to be reworked. However, at CinemaCon Las Vegas, where the trailer was launched, Todd clarified that although Joker 2 is not a musical, music is an essential element in the story. “Arthur is weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has his blessings on him. This reveals a lot about the dance in the first film… it doesn’t feel like it’s a big step forward here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it,” he said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly.
Is Batman there?
Well, where the Joker and Harley Quinn are, Batman can’t be far behind? If you’re expecting Robert Pattinson or any other actor to play Batman, don’t be. Joker: Folie à Deux picks up where the first part (2019) left off. And the first part established the timeline very clearly: the events take place when Bruce Wayne aka Batman is a young child, as Arthur is seen feuding with Wayne Sr. It’s safe to believe that Bruce will still be in school in the sequel.
Any other recurring characters from Joker?
Although we’re not sure if we’ll see a younger Bruce Wayne anywhere in Joker 2, Zazie Beetz is the only actor other than Joaquin who has been confirmed to reprise his role in the sequel. She plays Sophie Dumond, a single mother and neighbor to Arthur.
Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 4.
