In its consultation, the WBBSE said upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools can collaborate with “stakeholders” to adjust school timings without disrupting the academic calendar and midday meal programme.
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education on Wednesday asked state-run and state-aided educational institutions to change school timings due to intense heat prevailing in most parts of the state.
In its advisory, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, citing a release from the school education department on June 11, said upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools can collaborate with “stakeholders” to adjust school timings without disrupting the academic calendar and midday meal programme.
WBBSE Deputy Secretary Ritabrata Chatterjee said the consultation stressed the importance of considering “weather conditions” in their respective areas while taking such decisions.
Cities and districts of South Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia are experiencing hot and humid weather with temperatures ranging between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.
Though no specific area was mentioned in the advisory, a School Education Department official clarified that the advisory was aimed at addressing the difficulties faced by children attending classes in extreme heat, which often increases the chances of falling ill.
The official further informed that many primary and upper primary schools have already adjusted their class timings to morning time.
“Many primary and upper primary schools have already rescheduled the morning classes. We have allowed every institution, even at the secondary and higher secondary level, to change the class timings as per their convenience till the weather conditions improve for the benefit of students and teaching/non-teaching staff,” the official said.
