West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed her disapproval about the proposal for semester system in primary classes and slammed Education Minister Bratya Basu for making it public without her consent.
Chairing a review meeting with ministers and top bureaucrats at the state secretariat, Banerjee asked Basu to consult them before taking such policy decisions.

“This (semester in primary schools) will not happen (here). I do not want to put unnecessary pressure on children, but rather reduce the weight of their school bags. This cannot apply to primary school students who cannot even speak properly. Can do.” Whatever arrangements are in place in the schools, they will continue. There will be no semester system in schools.
“It can be continued in colleges and universities because the students there know the system and have become accustomed to it,” he said.

Banerjee asked the minister not to disclose any such decision in the press.
“Neither I nor the Chief Secretary knew about the introduction of semester system in primary classes. I have seen it in the newspaper. Look bratya, you are an education minister but please remember that if there is any new policy decision So please consult us,” Banerjee said.
Basu said that he also saw it in the press and sent the proposal to the Chief Secretary and the decision would be implemented only after Banerjee’s approval.

“How did it reach the media? Four advisors took the decision and it was presented,” the CM said.
Basu later told reporters that the Board of Primary Education has sent a proposal in this regard to the Education Department.
He said, “We have sent it to the Chief Secretary as it is a policy matter. Since the Chief Minister has made it clear that she is not giving consent to the proposal, the matter is stalled here.”
“I want to remind you that the semester system was introduced at the higher secondary level after the approval of the CM,” he said.
