There’s a new hair trend making the rounds on social media – glitter shampoo. Scrolling through the hashtag #haircare, you’ve probably seen the alluring trend of shiny, glittery hair. But before you use craft glitter to make your next wash even more glamorous, here’s a look at the potential damage it can cause to your scalp and the environment.
Shiny threads or the danger of microplastics?
Many videos on TikTok and Instagram show users creating shiny hair by mixing colored craft glitter with clear shampoo. For example, this trend by beauty influencer Tessa Pae has been viewed nearly 32 million times.
While the results are undoubtedly amazing, dermatologists are concerned about the effects of glitter on your hair. Dermatologist Dr Amit Vij says, “Glittery hair may come at a price. Most glitters are made of plastic microplastics, which can leach harmful heavy metals and damage your hair, leaving it dry and dull.”
Glitter typically lasts in hair for one to three days, depending on the material and hair texture. Dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon Dr. B.L. Jangid has an option for those who want to add serious sparkle to their hair: “Biodegradable glitter is an ecofriendly option, as it’s made from materials like plant cellulose. It’s a safe option that washes out after some time.” However, he warns that eco-friendly glitter can still irritate the scalp.
Short term shine but long term risk
Despite the allure of glittery hair, Vij warns against long-term use. “Glitter in products like gels or sprays can melt or break down in the hair, especially when left on or exposed to heat.”
If you still want the glitter effect, consider temporary hair color or natural products made from colored rice and oatmeal. Before using glitter, choose light reflecting products containing mica for a natural shine.
Do you still rely on glitter? Try applying it to a small section of your hair for a short time and wash it off immediately. Remember to take regular hair care to prevent your hair from getting dry or damaged.
