Vascular surgeon with 18 years of experience shares easy exercises to prevent leg fatigue after prolonged sitting

Dr. Sumit Kapadia, a vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist with 18 years of experience, addressed the issue in an Instagram video posted on December 14. He shared that many patients complain that their legs feel tired and heavy at the end of the day.

What are the reasons?

Tired legs at the end of the day can have many causes and may be related to the muscles and cardiovascular system. These include your heart, blood vessels and nerves. “The reasons could range from weak muscles to poor circulation,” Dr Kapadia said. So, poor circulation is responsible, causing blood to accumulate in the lower limbs. As a result, this causes problems that many people often complain about, ranging from heaviness to discomfort.

How to stop?

The doctor suggested two exercises – calf raises and ankle pumps. For the first phase, you need to stand up and rise on your toes 20 times, which helps pump blood back to the heart. Next, for an ankle pump, especially if you’re sitting all day, move your feet up and down as if you’re pressing pedals.

Dr. Kapadia recommends the exercise for anyone who is experiencing cold hands, numb or tingling feet, poor circulation symptoms and tired, heavy feet. These exercises are especially suitable for people who sit at their desks for long periods of time. For better results the doctor suggested exercising 3 to 4 times a day.
