Dodital is a quiet and beautiful lake in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, which is at an altitude of about 3,024 meters above sea level (about 10,000 ft). This lake is surrounded by dense cedar and oak forests and is considered a great place for trekking enthusiasts. The natural beauty here is mesmerized. This place is also important due to mythological beliefs.

The religious importance of Dodital is very deep. Brahmachari Mahesh Swaroop says that this is the place where Goddess Parvati gave birth to Lord Ganesha. It is said that Mata Parvati was bathing here and she produced a child (Ganesh) with her body scum, which she asked to guard at the door. According to this belief, this lake is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. An ancient temple is also located on the banks of the lake, where devotees worship with reverence.

To reach Dodital, first you have to reach Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. From Delhi or Dehradun, you can reach Uttarkashi by bus, taxi. The distance from Dehradun to Uttarkashi is about 160 kilometers, which takes about 6 to 7 hours to decide. The trek starts from a place called Sangamchatti, 12 km from Uttarkashi. From here, walking starts, which takes you to Dodital via Bever.

The track of Dodital is usually completed in 3 to 4 days. The first day is trek from Sangamachatti to Bever (8 km), the second day, from Beawar to Dodital (about 16 km). On the third day, trekkers return to Bever and reach Uttarkashi on the fourth day via Sangamchatti. However, if you are fit and lack time, then this trek can also be completed in 3 days.

The weather changes during this trek, so warm clothes and waterproof jackets are necessary. Keep a good grip trekking shoes, water bottle, energy bar, flashlight, personal medicines, sleeping bags and raincoats. Since there is no network many times, keep the necessary documents and ID proof with you, which can be useful at the time of any forest permit.

The time from April to June and September to November is considered to be the most perfect for the Dodital track. In these months the weather is clean and cool, which makes the trekking easier and the views look very beautiful. If you want to experience snowfall, then the time from December to February can be chosen, but during this time the trek may be a bit challenging.

If you are trekking for the first time or in a small group, then it is prudent to take a local guide. On the way, there are many diversion in many places where there is a danger of wandering without a guide. Local guides not only ensure safe trekking but also give you information about the culture, vegetation and lakes related to that area. Usually a guide fee is 800 to 1,200 rupees daily.
