Sanandan Upadhyay/Ballia: Even today, a unique tradition is seen during the marriage ceremony in some districts of Purvanchal. Actually this tradition is very ancient. This is called the ritual of mixing paddy. There are many specialties of this ritual.
The ritual of not mixing paddy is derived from the word dhaan dhaanya. It also means opulence, wealth and property. This is a very ancient tradition which is still intact in a limited form. Paddy, turmeric, jaggery and durva are also added to it. Especially in some districts of Purvanchal, this tradition continues even today. Without this, marriage is not considered consummated in these districts.
What is the ritual of mixing paddy?
Acharya Pandit Bhupendra Kumar Mishra told that paddy is used in marriages. This paddy is given to the bride and groom at the time of tilak or groom’s varna. Along with this there is also turmeric, jaggery and durva (doob grass). Its purpose is that just as paddy blossoms like lava when heated, similarly your married life should remain flourishing even in the face of hardships. Turmeric is auspicious and jaggery is a symbol of sweetness. Durva is associated with land i.e. soil. Durva strengthens each other’s grip. That is, Durva is a symbol of connection with each other, children, expansion of happiness etc. in married life.
In the end the entire pavilion gets filled with lava.
In marriage, paddy is used in the form of lava in havan. It is called Laja Home. Mantra – Imanlaja Naupantau Samriddhi Karanam Tava… It is used so much that the wedding hall eventually gets filled with this lava.

Nowadays many people do not know this ritual. But at one time a marriage was considered incomplete without this ritual. Even today there are many districts and families where this ritual is being performed.
