In view of the harvest festival ‘Pongal’ celebrations in Tamil Nadu from January 14 to 16, 2025, the UGC-National Eligibility Test to be held during those days should also be rescheduled, Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiyan appealed to the Center on Monday.

Writing a letter to Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, Chejian said the National Testing Agency under the Education Ministry has scheduled UGC-NET December 2024 from January 3 to 16, 2025. Pongal festival falls on January 14, 2025 and Thiruvalluvar Day (Mattu Pongal). ) is celebrated the next day and Farmers’ Day (Uzhavar Thirunal– Kanum Pongal) is celebrated on 16 January.

Pongal was not just a festival but “a symbol of our culture and traditional heritage that spans back more than 3,000 years,” the minister underlined and said the Tamil Nadu government had already scheduled January 14 to 16 for the Pongal festival. Holidays were announced till 2025.
“If the NET exam is conducted during the Pongal holidays, it will hamper preparations for the exam in view of the festival,” he said. Further, Cheziyan said, “I therefore request your intervention to reschedule the UGC-NET examinations and other examinations on appropriate dates, thereby ensuring that Tamil Nadu and other states where harvest festivals are celebrated. Students and scholars can appear in the examinations.”

The minister informed that in view of the Pongal festival, the Chartered Accountants Foundation Examination has been rescheduled to January 2025, following the request of Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha MP S Venkatesan.
